Nick Paquette is a recent graduate of SUNY New Paltz (2019), and a graduate of Smithtown High School West (2015). Nick played 3 years of Varsity Basketball in High School, leading as captain during his Junior and Senior years. He was selected to the All-County team his senior year, in addition to being named Smithtown West Athlete of the Year. A two sport athlete, Nick was also named All-County in Track & Field for the high jump. In college, Nick was an integral part of SUNY New Paltz’s program for 4 years. He finished his career as the all-time leader in three point field goal percentage, shooting 40.5% on his career, and setting the school record his Freshman year at 48.9%. Shortly after his Sophomore season at New Paltz in April, 2017, Nick was diagnosed with Chronic Myeloid Leukemia, a rare type of blood cancer. After intensive chemotherapy treatment that summer, Nick made a remarkable and inspiring comeback to the court the following season, where he started 21 of 25 games. That year, he was awarded the prestigious SUNYAC Award of Valor, in addition to the SUNY New Paltz Heinz Ahlmeyer Jr. Award. He was twice selected to the SUNYAC Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll and also earned a spot on the SUNYAC All-Academic Team. Nick finished his career and graduated with honors, all while continuing to undergo daily chemotherapy treatment.
